Dear Community,

Sanitation conditions are becoming increasingly critical across Gaza. After 30 months in camps, in areas with no infrastructure or proper sewage systems, displaced persons and families are facing extreme challenges. The spread of disease and the increasing presence of rodents are becoming alarming. We are deeply concerned about the situation, and are looking for solutions together with experts on the ground.

See how Clean Shelter addressed this crisis and other urgent challenges throughout April:

Sanitation Solutions

We have now installed 8 toilet and shower units (total 32 cabins) and delivered and installed 4 septic tanks, providing essential sanitation facilities for approximately 160 families. Additionally, the team rebuilt a destroyed sewage system in a residential building housing 25 families, clearing rubble and installing a new pipe network connected to underground sewage. These interventions are making a vital contribution to general sanitation, sewage control, and disease prevention for communities living in increasingly challenging conditions.

Shelter and Protection

1. Home repairs

Throughout April, Clean Shelter continued bringing families back home by restoring safety and improving living conditions in damaged shelters, making houses livable and warm again. A total of 46 families were able to return home, with walls repaired to provide privacy, warmth, and, most importantly, protection for children from falling through open gaps. In addition, 5 kitchen water tanks were installed in the homes. Clean Shelter has also launched a pilot project to improve accessibility in damaged buildings and homes following widespread destruction, already restoring safe entrances and staircases in one building housing 36 families, with 10 buildings targeted in this initial phase.

2. In Zomi and Mariam Protection Camps

Camp management coordinated and implemented comprehensive support for displaced families:

·    Replaced small tents with larger family tents, providing each family with mattresses and two pillows for improved comfort.

·    Organized a women’s and girls’ event featuring an educational workshop combined with psychosocial support.

·    Hosted a recreational day targeting children from both camps, including prize distributions to bring joy and normalcy.

·    Recycled old torn tents to create shaded shelters for children’s activities and play areas.

Emptied all sewage wells in both Zomi and Mariam camps to maintain hygiene and prevent health risks.

Clean water access remains steady💧

Our two desalination systems continue providing clean water through 15 distribution sites, serving 60,000 people every day. This vital service ensures families have access to safe drinking water despite ongoing challenges.

Thank you for supporting our work to alleviate hardship in Gaza.

With gratitude and solidarity,
Seba and Tom,
Co-founders, Clean Shelter
