Water Provision
Access to clean water is a fundamental right, yet for most families in Gaza, it remains out of reach.
At Clean Shelter, we take concrete action to address this crisis by providing emergency water distribution, operating sustainable desalination units, and rebuilding essential infrastructure.
Desalination of Water Wells in Al-Mawasi
In 2025, the Clean Shelter team carried out a survey of water wells and their conditions to identify suitable sources for desalination. We purchased 2 large scale desalination units and connected them to 15 nearby IDP camps, providing the daily consumption of approximately 60,000 people. This effort aims to strengthen public health, reduce the risk of waterborne diseases, and ease the burden on overstretched humanitarian actors.
Al-Buraq
In May and June 2025, Clean Shelter finalized the installation of a medium-scale desalination unit connected to a comprehensive water distribution grid. The unit treats water from a local well with a TDS level of 900 ppm, producing 60,000 liters of safe drinking water daily. Initially, this system serves 30,000 displaced families across five areas.
The distribution network links directly to five displacement camps, ensuring reliable access to clean water for drinking, washing, and other essential needs. By July 2025, our team observed that families continued walking long distances from designated camps to collection sites. In response, we urgently expanded the network to a sixth location (see distribution maps). We are actively exploring further expansion to ensure that more displaced families have water closer to their homes.
Al-Aqsa University Area
This area hosts around 100,000 displaced families with limited resources. In September 2025, Clean Shelter installed a second desalination unit to address urgent needs.
The unit currently supplies up to 20,000 people per day across nine sites. We are continuing to explore expansion to reach 30,000 people daily, ensuring wider coverage and access to clean drinking water in one of the most heavily affected areas.
Khan Younis Water Grid Rehabilitation
Recognizing the urgent need for long-term solutions, we launched a major water infrastructure project in Khan Younis, set to be completed by March 2025. This initiative restores and expands surface water networks and public faucets in six neighborhoods, benefiting 120,000 people—many of whom have lost their homes and rely on public infrastructure for survival.
Emergency Water Distribution
Between May and October 2024, we purchased, transported, and distributed an average of 20 cubic meters of clean drinking water per day to internally displaced persons (IDPs), camps, and communities across southern and central Gaza. In total, we provided 1.6 million liters (1,600 cubic meters) of safe drinking water, helping thousands of families survive amid extreme shortages.
In northern Gaza, we are increasing our water distribution efforts in Gaza City, ensuring displaced families have access to clean drinking water despite ongoing infrastructure damage. In January and February 2025, we also distributed emergency water supplies, ensuring displaced communities had access to drinking water despite severe restrictions.
Scaling Up for Lasting Impact
As the crisis continues, we are expanding our water distribution efforts. Beyond Khan Younis, we aim to replicate our large-scale water infrastructure projects in other areas, ensuring that more communities gain access to safe, sustainable drinking water.
