Dear Community,
November-December Newsletter: Restoring Dignity & Winter Readiness
1. Winter Response: Protecting Our Camps Zomi and Mariam.
As winter sets in, our team has been working around the clock to keep 147 families safe and dry:
Fighting the Floods: We’ve gone beyond basic repairs by implementing drainage systems and adding soil to eliminate deep mud. Shelters have been reinforced with tarps to withstand heavy downpours.
Warmth & Nutrition: Thanks to your support and partner donations, we distributed 400 blankets to those who don't have any. We are also ensuring no one goes hungry by providing daily hot meals to all residents of Zomi and Mariam Camps. Cost 4000 USD
Critical Protection: To ensure clean water continues flowing, we built a protective arbor for the Al-Aqsa desalination engine, shielding it from weather damage
2. Bringing Water to Al-Qadsiya
The Al-Qadsiya region in West Khan Younis holds 10 small IDP camps. These families were facing severe hygiene challenges due to critical water scarcity.
Following a community assessment, we connected the area to a nearby water well and installed a mobile water pump to deal with topography challenges. cost = USD 8,184
Infrastructure: A new pipeline network was established for 2 camps, while the other 8 were connected via existing networks.
Rotation System: To maximize coverage, we distribute to 5 camps daily, serving the remaining 5 the following day. This ensures all 10 camps have a total of 100,000 liters of reliable access to clean running water for multiple purposes.
Impact: consistent water access to approximately 3000 people.
3. Shelter Rehabilitation: Small Repairs for Partially-Damaged Homes
In the pilot phase (Phase 1), we successfully repaired 10 damaged homes in Khan Younis and Gaza City. Using local labor and materials, we helped families return to safe living spaces that provide privacy, warmth, and protection against the heavy winter rains. Encouraged by the community’s positive response, we are expanding to Phase 2 this December and January, with plans to repair 50 additional homes across the Strip, prioritizing women-led households. So far in Phase 2, we have completed repairs on 10 of these 50 homes, bringing our total to 20 houses repaired. See video
4. Critical Infrastructure: Nuseirat Desalination System
We’ve completed essential repairs on the Nuseirat desalination system.
Capacity: Now producing 18,0000 liters per day
Reach: 5 liters per person per day, serving 36,000 people daily with clean drinking water. cost = 6000 USD
Looking Ahead: Priorities for December 2025 and January 2026
Water & Sanitation (WASH)
• Desalination Repairs: We are targeting repairs for desalination units in Khan Younis (Industrial Zone) and Gizan Al-Najjar to expand clean water access. Our target capacity is 50 m³ per day, which will secure approximately 5 liters per person per day for thousands of families.
• Maintenance: We will conduct ongoing maintenance for the Elburaq water facility to ensure uninterrupted service.
• Al-Qadsiya Pest & Vector Control: Building on our water supply expansion in Al-Qadsiya, we are launching a complementary pest control initiative to eliminate insects and rodents that cause skin infections, allergic reactions, and potential disease transmission—critical for maintaining public health in the camps.
• Toilet Installation: Following damage from winter storms, we are conducting field assessments at camps to identify needs and install additional toilet facilities in vulnerable areas.
• Innovative Sewage Solutions: Al-Mawasi faces severe sewage challenges exacerbated by heavy rainfall and difficult soil conditions. We are exploring and implementing locally manufactured underground sewage tanks as a sustainable solution to this critical sanitation problem.
