Newsletter March-April 2025

23.04.2025

Dear community,

While facing renewed airstrikes and new waves of displacement across Gaza, we were forced to temporarily scale back our field operations to prioritize the safety of our team. Still, our commitment to delivering life-saving support has not wavered. From restoring clean water systems to reopening our first protection camp, since March, here’s how we’ve been supporting displaced families:

Khan Younis Water Grid

Clean Shelter has completed a water infrastructure intervention in Khan Younis, restoring access to clean drinking water for approximately 120,000 residents across six neighborhoods. This work addressed urgent needs following the destruction of the local water grid. Our vendor and our team used available resources - including damaged pipes - to rebuild the network, supporting both immediate access and long-term infrastructure recovery.

First Protection Camp

The rehabilitation of the Zomi IDP camp is now complete, enabling it to host 100 vulnerable displaced families - including women-led households and families with members who have special needs - in conditions that meet basic standards of safety and dignity. Once home to over 100 families, the camp had become uninhabitable due to extensive damage. Thanks to our dedicated team, we’ve restored essential infrastructure, including sanitation facilities and shelters, making it livable once again.

Recent Updates: Annual Report Webinar Thank you to everyone who joined the live webinar earlier this month. It offered space to reflect on our work and share updates directly from the field. Your questions and feedback continue to shape how we respond to evolving needs.

Farewell to Duke Volunteers – Looking Forward to Next Year!

Clean Shelter gUG founders@cleanshelter.org www.cleanshelter.org April concluded our current collaboration with Duke University students participating in the Bass Connections program. Their contributions across research, communications, and logistical support were valuable under difficult conditions. Clean Shelter will continue in the program for 2025–2026, with preparations already underway to host the next cohort.

Looking Ahead:

Planned Desalination Unit for Al-Mawasi

Installing a new desalination unit to address the growing demand for clean water in Al-Mawasi. With a planned capacity of 8,000 liters per hour (approximately 55,000–75,000 liters daily), the system would serve thousands of displaced individuals. The plan includes developing a supporting water grid to distribute water across nearby camps, at the total cost of 80,000 EUR.

Join Us in Munich – April 29

Clean Shelter will take part in Medico International’s event “When Health Becomes the Goal” on April 29 in Munich. The event will offer an opportunity to exchange experiences and raise awareness around the health and humanitarian challenges in Gaza.
